History of the Christmas Piñata

The tradition of the modern piñata is said to have originated at the same time that the Christmas inns were originated in Acolman de Nezahualcóyotl, in the present state of Mexico, near the archaeological zone of Teotihuacán. In 1586 the Augustinian friars of Acolman received the authorization of Pope Sixtus V to celebrate what was called “Masses of Christmas”, which later became the “Posadas” (Mexican Christmas Celebration). It was in these masses that took place in the days before Christmas that the friars introduced the piñata. They used the piñata as an allegory to help in the efforts to evangelize the people of the region. The original piñata had the shape of a star with seven peaks. The peaks represented the seven deadly sins and the bright colors of the piñata symbolized the temptations. The piñata was transformed into a representation of blind faith and virtue or will to overcome sin. The candies and other goodies inside the piñata represented the riches of the kingdom of the heavens, so therefore the teaching that was accompanied by faith and one virtue could overcome sin and receive all the rewards of the heavens.

Vallarta Tourism Expanding at an Unprecedented Rate

The number of tourists visiting Puerto Vallarta has risen dramatically over the past few years.   Thanks in great part to the federal and state governments’ efforts to strengthen connectivity by air and sea and private entrepreneurs working with them to create new attractions that will lure even more visitors to Vallarta…tourism is accelerating at an unprecedented rate.

In recent years multiple airlines have expanded their services to this popular beach vacation destination.

The company that operates Puerto Vallarta’s international airport Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, recently reported that Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz (PVR) has reached its 38th month of continuous growth.

All of this has led to an expansion of the airport’s customs and immigration areas which will make visitors’ first experience in Puerto Vallarta run smoother and easier. According to the director of Puerto Vallarta’s Tourism Trust, Agustin Alvarez Valdivia, the airport renovations began at the end of the high season and are expected to be completed before the next winter vacation period begins in November.

Bachelor in Paradise Returns to Mexico

The filming for the third season of ABC’s Bachelor in Paradise summer reality show begins this week.  With hopes of finding love with other Bachelor and Bachelorette castoffs, the first round of contestants already headed for Mexico.

Playa Escondida in Sayulita, Mexico is where the cast and crew are returning and where last season’s contestants spent three glorious weeks looking for love while exploring Vallarta-Nayarit.

At least five ladies who were rejected by Ben Higgins and several guys who have been (or will soon be) sent home on JoJo Fletcher’s this season.  Season 3 will have an all-star cast and has the potential to be the most dramatic season of Bachelor in Paradise ever!

Puerto Vallarta

A favorite for American travelers looking for a beach getaway is Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Long before tourists discovered it this charming town of white stucco, terra-cotta tile roofs and cobblestone streets clinging to the lush tropical Sierra Madre Mountains spilling into the Pacific waters of Banderas Bay. And it still is!

In addition to sun-kissed beaches and aquamarine waters, Puerto Vallarta offers great restaurants, rich culture and an enchanting town.

Ever since the 1950s, artists and other creative types have been drawn to the spectacular scenery and laid back charm.  In 1963 John Houston filed Night of the Iguana with Richard Burton. When Elizabeth Taylor came to keep an eye on her lover, hundreds of reporters followed, putting Puerto Vallarta Mexico on the map. Liz and Dick fell in love with the place and bought adjoining houses, which you can see in Gringo Gulch. Bob Dylan and other 60s rockers flocked here for the Bohemian atmosphere and the, ahem, benefits of having peyote-eating Huichol Indians nearby.

A Little Piece of Paradise in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

There are many reasons why Puerto Vallarta continues to draw travelers to its cobblestone streets, sparkling coast and scenic Sierra Madre Mountains – among these reasons is the fact that there simply is so much to do and so many amazing places to see here.

If you’ve never been to Puerto Vallarta before, you’ll most likely have a hard time narrowing the To Do List down to a few attractions.

Yet, as in all destinations, some attractions in Puerto Vallarta are better than others, especially for family travelers with kids in tow. One of them is the little piece of tropical paradise fittingly named Las Caletas, a coastal land nestled between the coast and the Sierra Madre Mountains not far from the city’s center. [Read more…]
