Madonnari Festival Returns to Puerto Vallarta February 9-11, 2024
Puerto Vallarta is gearing up for the much-anticipated return of the Madonnari Festival, set to unfold from February 9-11, 2024, as announced by the Puerto Vallarta/Santa Barbara Sister Cities Committee. Organizers are excited to present the sixteenth edition of this cultural spectacle, transforming the Plaza de Armas into an open-air gallery showcasing the talent of artists.
During this three-day event, the pavement of the Plaza de Armas (PV’s main plaza) will be adorned with intricate chalk paintings, bringing to life a mesmerizing display of creativity. The once-pedestrian cement becomes a canvas where artists, both young and old, reinterpret space, creating thought-provoking illusions and masterful perspectives inspired by art movements from around the world.
Raúl Coultas, the festival director, revealed details about this traditional celebration during a recent press conference. Artists from all around Mexico, including Querétaro, Guanajuato, Michoacán, the State of Mexico, Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Durango, have already signed up to participate.

Additionally, winners of the top two places will have the opportunity to travel to Santa Barbara, California, to participate in the city’s festival, contingent upon holding a valid visa.

Madonnari art traces its roots back to 16th-century Italy when itinerant artists, initially commissioned for cathedral paintings, began recreating their works on the streets. The term “Madonnari” reflects the prevalence of Madonna images in their creations. First documented in London in 1906, the tradition reached Puerto Vallarta in 1987. Today, Madonnari Festivals are celebrated globally, bridging historical traditions with modern artistic expression.
