Puerto Vallarta to Host Inaugural GLTA Tennis Tournament
The Gay Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA), boasting over 20,000 members globally, will hold its first-ever tournament in Mexico under the banner of Coconutz Puerto Vallarta 2024. This event marks a significant addition to the GLTA World Tour, spanning continents including Europe, Asia, Australia, the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South America.
Scheduled from March 14 to 17, the tournament will unfold at Parota Park, featuring singles, doubles, and categorized matches, ranging from Open, representing the highest skill level, to C, signifying a lower proficiency tier. Admission is free, with game times slated from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm Thursday through Saturday, culminating in the grand final on Sunday at 10:00 am.
Competitors will vie for first and second place in each category, with art trophies crafted by a prominent indigenous community in the region up for grabs. Festivities include a reception to acquaint participants with tournament details and a closing ceremony at the Grand Miramar Hotel, offering panoramic views of Banderas Bay and a taste of Mexican culture.
The inaugural event will draw 130 players from diverse nationalities, including Americans, Canadians, Australians, Filipinos, Germans, Armenians, Britons, Irish, Dutch, South Africans, Costa Ricans, Puerto Ricans, Jamaicans, Malaysians, Indians, Peruvians, and Mexicans.
While the GLTA acronym denotes the gay and lesbian community, the tournament embraces inclusivity, extending its invitation to the LGBTQ+ community as well as heterosexual players. Despite its non-professional status, many participants boast commendable skill levels, ensuring a competitive atmosphere in a family-friendly setting, with provisions for food and beverages available for attendees.
