Guadalajara to Vallarta Highway Nov. 2020 Update

The promise of getting from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta by car in just two and a half hours won’t come to fruition for at least one more year, according to the latest report issued by the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT), Nayarit delegation.

According to the October 2020 update, despite the fact that the undersecretary of infrastructure, Cedric Iván Escalante, assured that the 163-kilometer Jala-Compostela-Puerto Vallarta highway would be ready for travel in 2020, two of the three Vía Corta (shortcut) sections under construction have not yet been completed.

Section 1, a 54 kilometers stretch from Puerto Vallarta to Compostela, was completed and in operation until August 31, 2020, when it was closed to traffic, due to the fact that work needed to be carried after landslides at kilometer 38 necessitated the stabilization of the cliffs to prevent and contain future occurrences. This work is expected to conclude on November 30, 2020.

Meanwhile, sections 2 and 3, both in the State of Nayarit, are still under construction.

Section 2, which goes from kilometer 54 to kilometer 83 + 100 from Compostela to Las Varas, Nayarit is 51 percent complete.

Section 3 from Las Varas to Puerto Vallarta has a length of 79.6 kilometers and is the section causing the worst delay. The SCT reported that it is only 40 percent complete and probably won’t be finished until October 2021 when the contract with the Impulsora del Desarrollo y el Empleo en América Latina (IDEAL) company ends.

When the construction of the Guadalajara – Vallarta shortcut was originally announced, it was said that the work would only last two years, from 2012 to 2014, however, the road work has suffered constant and ongoing delays due to obtaining environmental permits and right of way releases.
