Living Like the Famous Golden Girls in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Living like the famous ‘Golden Girls,’ Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia is becoming more popular. Many baby boomers decide to retire in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and many are single. More than one in every three boomers are unmarried, according to the Center for Family and Demographic Research. There is a larger number of women than men in this age group, the Gerontological Society of America reports.

There is a rise in group housing again in the United States, but some are trying it in Puerto Vallarta. Many women are finding this a great way to save money.

Living like the famous 'Golden Girls,' Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia is becoming more popular. Many baby boomers decide to retire in Puerto Vallarta, MexicoCarolina Barrera found her housemate because they were working together. “She was one of my first friends in PV and the first time I ever shared my living space,” says Carolina, “we lived together for nine years and then I finally built my own house.”

Many women who retire in PV end up finding a part-time job, opening their own business or doing a lot of volunteer work. There are a whole lot of benefits and rewards to the idea of mature women living together. These can be spiritual, psychological, emotional and financial, especially if you are depending on social security.

Creating a social network – not on the Internet, but in real life – is a crucial component to healthy aging. Expats tend to hang out together and for some, they find house mates. It is a great way to share issues, friends, important social time and boomer house mates have more fun. This also helps when someone gets sick and needs attention.

Carolina says her housemate became like family, they did not have any arguments and they helped each other on many levels. As more women think about moving to Puerto Vallarta in their golden years, there is a possibility that they can find other women with similar interests and become house mates.

The United States is one of the few developed nations that have no organized public policy for providing long-term care, so group living may be in your future. The cost of living in Puerto Vallarta is a good deal less than in the US, so your dollar goes further.
