Mexico to Celebrate National Tequila Day March 21-29, 2020
In April of 2018, the Mexican Government decreed that “National Tequila Day” would be celebrated every year on the third Saturday of March each year. The first edition in March of 2019, was a week-long party in honor of the iconic drink that has become the country’s ‘ambassador par excellence.’
More than 10,000 cocktails were sold in the 24 restaurants, hotels, and distilleries on Jalisco’s Ruta del Tequila that participated in the first edition of National Tequila Day, setting a record for the number of tequila-based drinks sold in a week.
This year’s celebration, set to take place from March 21 to March 29, will be bigger and better, with all kinds of activities, such as tequila tastings, cocktail contests, food pairings and special menus offered in several cities around the country.
The festivities start on Saturday, March 21 with a huge celebration, sponsored by the Jalisco government, the National Chamber of the Tequila Industry (CNIT) and tequila companies, to be held in Guadalajara’s Trasloma Garden.
More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the opening party which will include tequila tastings, pairings and the grand finale of a nationwide cocktail competition that began last year, the Tequila Mixology Contest – all accompanied by cultural and musical activities.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. The National Tequila Day celebration will continue for a full week with all kinds of activities, among which is Cocktail Week, with 62 restaurants in Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Mérida, Tijuana and Mexico City participating.
Cocktail Week is an important aspect of the tequila celebration, where diners that visit participating restaurants will find a special menu of cocktails made with tequila at preferential prices. The most interesting thing about this activity is that the cocktails created by the winners of the 2019 Tequila Mixology Contest will be among the menu’s offerings.
“The celebration of our national drink makes the industry and the whole country proud. Tequila is found in over 120 countries, and at least 70,000 people are involved in its production, a sign of its importance in the cultural and economic development of our country,” Rodolfo González said. “With activities of this nature, it will be possible to show the benefits of the Mexican drink that has conquered the most demanding palates in the world, and that today continues to enchant new destinations.”
According to Jalisco Economic Growth and Development Coordinator, Alejandro Guzmán Larralde, the importance of National Tequila Day is that it reaffirms the growing consumption of the beverage, whose production is one million liters per day, of which two-thirds are exported outside the country.
