Traveling to Puerto Vallarta with my business, I’ve had the guidance of the Tequila version of a Sommelier with the finest of wines. If you hate Tequila you most likely had a bad experience with low-quality Tequila. Selecting the right Glassware
Jose Cuervo’s master distillers were consulted in the design of a set of long-stemmed Riedel Tequila glasses which is the perfect glass for Tequila shots and tasting. This is absolutely necessary if you’re serious about Tequila. Valdez said a shot glass does not allow you to experience the full complexity of Tequila and drinking Tequila slowly from a shot glass cheapens the Tequila experience.
You will be able to pick out the differences in the Tequila you’re drinking right from the start by your eye, whether you drinking an unaged Blanco, Gold, Reposado, Anejo or extra Anejo (aged over time in wood).
Based on the quality of the liquid, you will know if its 100% Blue Agave Tequila which all quality brands will be. A heavier, ticker body will be found in Tequilas that have been aged longer. You should be able to pick-out imperfections in a lower-quality distillation process.
Savor the Aroma
The sense of smell is the key to tasting Tequila. You might sniff through either nostril. As with a fine wine, different people will pick out different aromas, Valdez recommends taking three little sniffs before tasting the Tequila. Smell what aromas you are able to identify without moving the liquid is the first step. Lastly, twirl the tequila to let the aromas come through the glass.
