The 25th International Mariachi and Charro Festival is an important part of Mexico’s history and culture, especially in the State of Jalisco, where the tradition of the Charreria is alive and well to this day. The festival began on August 2nd in Guadalajara and will continue through September 2nd.
The translation of the word charro in English would be “cowboy”. Dating back to the history of the Charro to the Spanish Conquest, ranch owners would distinctive clothing and saddles worn by the cowboys to denote status and wealth. However, with a culture, etiquette, mannerism, clothing style and social status that is quite unique, the Mexican churros are truly different than the American cowboy.
Riding in private militias, the Charros played an important role on both sides of the Mexican War of Independence.
Popularized by the charros of Jalisco and the state of Mexico the Charreria became a national event around the 1930’s and has grown to become Mexico’s national sport.
Best described as a mixture of rodeo skills and dressage dancing horses, are similar to Vienna’s famed Lipizzaner stallions. Traditional competitive roping and ranch skills are shown by the riders along with exquisite costumes, custom tack and horse grooming and horsemanship skills.
