Mexico’s Presidential Plane Gets $99 Million Dollar Purchase Offer
According to the local media, a wealthy businessman, Gustavo Jimenez Pons, made headlines recently when he offered to buy the executive jetliner that came with the job for president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador which he calls a “wasteful luxury” for the sum of $99 million dollars.
However, Gustavo Jimenez Pons must get in line just like everyone else with his multi-million dollar offer to purchase the 300 seats Boeing Dreamliner 787. Jimenez Pons want to rent the aircraft out at the rate of $20,000 per hour to presidents of other countries who do not have access to private planes, or perhaps to rock star groups like the Rolling Stones. He thought is using the aircraft like a taxi.
In 2016 the executive jetliner was purchased by Enrique Pena Nieto, the outgoing president. He added a sophisticated communications system along with a special rest area for the president.
The 300-seat Boeing Dreamliner 787 is currently valued at $220 million and the local media reports that Pons’ offer of $99 million would be a cut-rate price.
With his landslide victory in the election this past July, Lopez Obrador said he will never use a private aircraft and for that matter wants to sell this “wasteful luxury”.
It’s surprising that Jimenez Pons had to wait on line with people seeking favors, jobs or money from Lopez Obrador expressed by local newspapers. Selling the plan in Mexico is a tall order given the small market for people who want to purchase a jetliner.
