Vallarta-Nayarit Beaches Retain Blue Flag Certifications
The Ministry of Tourism announced last month Mexico is the first Latin American country to obtain Blue Flag status and has certified 53 beaches and two national marinas consolidating leadership in social and environmental and educational responsibilities.
The federal agency said in a statement in addition to the 34 Blue Flag beaches whose distinctions were renewed, there were 18 new beaches in state of Baja California Sur, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Quintana Roo certified for the 2018-2019 season.
The certification will last for one year and will be judged to re-evaluate each location to ensure all criteria’s have been met.
The recognition is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The Blue Flag is awarded to beaches based on their compliance with 33 attributes within four primary categories. With more than 4500 beaches and marinas in 45 countries that have met the established criteria for Water Quality, Environmental Education and Information, Environmental Management and safety & Other Services.
Ten Vallarta-Nayarit beaches, along with the Marina Riviera Nayarit, in a major environmental achievement all of the requirements needed to retain their Blue Flag credentials for another year. Banderas Bay is second only to Los Cabos following this year’s round of judging reached 12 certifications.
On July 4-7, 2018 renewal for the 2018-2019 season will be official will be held at Bahias de Huatulco during the upcoming XIII Clean Beach National Assembly certifications for Puerto Vallarta’s Amapas, Camarones, Conchas Chinas I, Conchas Chinas II, Garza Blanca, Palmares, Playa de Oro and Sheraton beaches.
Respectively, Nuevo Vallarta Norte and the Marina Riviera Nayarit will retain their international certifications for the sixth and fourth consecutive year. The Laguna de Santa María del Oro located in the Santa Maria del Oro municipality of Nayarit will accept a Blue Flag for the third time this year.
The Marina Riviera Nayarit, located in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, is the first of its kind to receive Blue Flag recognition setting the standard for other marinas to follow in their foot-steps in order to become part of the program.
